I am taking my girlfriend to the Kentucky Derby this year and I would like to buy her a dress and hat to wear, I absolutely do not know where to start, I need some advice from anyone who has been there, done that, or knows about it. She is latino, about 5-5, tan complextion and beautiful skin, plus size although not obese, just chubby, long black hair, and an absolute beautiful face, does anyone have any suggestions on hats, dresses, shoes etc. anything will help!!

It is a surprise, and she has never been there nor does she know anything about the vintage style of dress.

Aw shucks - that's super nice.
It's great you want to surprise her.

How about a shopping spree? Take her to a nice store such as Neimans, Nordstroms or Lord & Taylor and find something suitable. The shopping spree can still be a surprise but if you take her with you then you don't have to worry about something not fitting correctly - or looking out of place.

I agree - she needs to dress like royalty (think Princess Di in a nice classy suit or dress) and wear a nice floppy hair or a cute sassy hat. Go to the stores and find an ensemble. Don't be ashamed to ask a salesperson for advice either.

Also you can check past pics of the derby online - notice what the women are wearing and feed off of that.

Good luck.

Most women dress to the nines. Sunday dress , slightly below the knee, and a hat would be appropriate but not necessary. Think of what is worn at afternoon weddings held outdoors. This is the same look. This is not like the Academy Awards... no clevage, slinky look. There will be some well heeled people there; it's an uptown affair.

Sure. Since she is of tan complexion, I would suggest something in golden, orange, or red hues, no silvers or grays. And her hair is long, so I would suggest a 'floppy' hat (like J-Lo). And since she is plus size, I would suggest the dress be v-neck, knee or calf length, nothing too short, it would only make her look shorter. And of course, you should ask her what she would like and come up with something together. Hope that helped!

is that what you are calling your girlfriend? you need to respect more your girl, dont treat her like a female dog as much as to be taking her to a derby! gosh, you are so sexist!!

Why not ask her what she would like? After all, she has to wear it.
