Well in my day an album was a record, and a 45 was record. Both are wax vinyl. Both were played on a record player or stereo(turn table).
The album had about 8 or more songs on it (maybe 4 or more on each side). The 45 had one song on each side. Also the album played at speed 33rpm and the 45 at 45 rpm. Hope this helps.

An album is a collection of songs. A record can be either the physical disk (in this case an album and record can be the same thing), or it can be a released single. For example, "Record of the Year" is given based on a song (in whole - not just writing or performance, but the whole package). "Album of the Year" is given based on the entire "album" of songs. But physically speaking, a record is the disk itself, whether it be a single or an album.

Back in the olden days when I was a kid, an album was played on a record player at a speed of 33 1/3 . The album had several songs on it the same as your CDs of today. A record was called a 45 and only had one song on each side. I guess I am wrong too.

Funny, I was just talking to my friend about this the other week!

An "album" was a collection of records - the OLD ones which were as large as the records we think of (~12") BUT they only had one song per side. So, an album was a collection of records. (Ever see those old boxed collections? Like that, but only about one hour of music in the WHOLE box.)

Sometimes, on really old record players, you'll see all the settings - 45 (singles); 33 (what most of us think of as records); and 78 (The OLD records!)

Hope that answers it!

Same thing Joe. The chick above me is wrong, she's thinking of single. But even singles have more than one song. I know, I'm in the music business.
