Hamsters get bored easily, it is best to provide them with many toys, and tubes, plenty of room to exercise. Also I have learned from experience that they do better in a room with lots of activity. They don't do well when left alone.

How old is your hamster? If it's between 3-5 years and a large one or a dwarf between 2-3 years, he may getting ready to pass on. He also could just be a lazy hamster. We have 20, 10 larger size ones (Syrians) and 10 dwarfs. Some them sleep 18-22 hours a day while others are up a few hours in the day and half the night. Your hamster otherwise is acting very normal.

Get a hamster book or call the vet, I think he might be sick or not eating the right food. My hamster worked out every night of his life on his exercise wheel, even when he was an old man (they're life expectancy is 3yrs.) He could be suffering from mal-nutrition and does not have any energy.

There could be many reasons causing this:

1. He could be getting of old age and needs more rest. Therefore he isnt going to move around much at night anymore.

2. He may be sick. Obvious signs of sickness are: a wet tail/bottom (from diahreah), glassy eyes, dry nose, messy overall appearance ( due to lack of energy they dont clean their fur), and very lethargic. If you see any of these symptoms please take your hamster to the vet. He may be suffering from wet tail a common sickness that is cought by rodents, especially hamsters. This illness can be fatal if not treated immediatly. After even a few days it attacks their systems and usually they try to go into a coma and they become less responsive and eventually die shortly after going into the coma. This is how all 3 of our hamsters died. It was really sad because we never cought it quick enough.

3. He is bored. This happened with our hamsters. They were very bored so they just slept all the time. So we played with them like every day after school for just a few minutes or in the evening to get there blood pumping and out of their cages. Since hamsters like change We re arranged their cages around every time we cleaned them which was every few weeks so they wouldnt get so bored with their current surroundings. We placed some paper towel tubes in their cage with slits in the bottom so they could squeeze through it easier, plastic tubes, ladders or ramps, levels that can be placed at different hieghts on the cage walls, an excersise wheel and we also hid treats around the cage occassionaly. We also put them in excersise balls for about 15-30 minutes in the evening. They loved running around the house in those. Basically if you give them some new stuff like paper towel tubes, toys, treats or just play with them a little more than usual he may get his energy levels up more and not sleep as much.

4. Maybe he just likes to be lazy and enjoys his bed, who knows. If you get worried just make sure his food supply is near his bed and so is his water. Also if you think he isnt eating anything he may have stored a bunch of food in his bed and munches on that for food rather than from his food bowl. So if you dont see him touch his food bowl for a few days he is probably just fine because he has a stash in his bed. But if you see any signs of sickness that could be the cause and take him to the vet.

I'm sure your hamster is completly fine, he may just need some more change in his daily routine to get his energy levels up, or he may be sick. Just watch out for obvious signs of sickness and i'm sure your hamster will be fine! Have fun! And good luck! Bye!

Try playing with your hamster when they are awake to get enough exercise.

See my teddy bear hamster does the same thing. But I do what I regularly do is clean his cage, water him, and feed him. I just think its where he is getting old and his body is wearing down. That's probably what it is. He is old and doesn't do much anymore.
