The Pacific Ocean is home to the Mariana Trench is 11,033 meters (36,201 feet) deep. Which converts to 2.089583 miles deep. To quote the website aptly named...http://www.marianatrench.com/
The Mariana Trench is located in the Pacific Ocean, just east of the 14 Mariana Islands (11"21' North latitude and 142" 12' East longitude ) near Japan and Guam for us non submariners. As you probably already know, it is the deepest part of the earth's oceans, and the deepest location of the earth itself. It was created by ocean-to-ocean subduction, a phenomena in which a plate topped by oceanic crust is subducted beneath another plate topped by oceanic crust. In other words a Super Sea Quake...imagine that Tsumani? One of my son's teachers told him he was an idiot to believe that there was a trench underwater over 2 miles deep. Needless to say he went back the next Monday armed with the facts, sources and a 10 page report. I still have her letter of apology on his wall today. He came home so mad he said "I know you and grandpa said it's over 2 miles deep and I believe you and him over her any day of the week." I told him that believing is fine but now prove it. He didn't even get a grade or extra credit and I think she retiried a few years later. I'm a teacher and one, you never ever call any student stupid or an idiot. If you are going to show your getto side to the students at least, make sure you are correct before making a fool of them in front of the class, because I guarantee that the next day in school, it will be the teacher looking like the fool.
