I have 2 Meg Broadband via a BT ADSL line. Currently using USB wired modem and acheiving 2 meg. Looking to go WiFi so I can use my laptop in any room and also connect to the family main desktop. I am looking at a wireless router which says it is 54 mbps maximum (whatever that means). If I change from wired to WiFi, will I get the same upload/download speed from my WiFi or will it slow my operation down?
I use my wired modem for streaming webcam, VOIP and podcasting and also for downloading streamed video & audio (internet TV & Radio). Will I be able to do this with WiFi as I can with wired? Is WiFi capable of routing 2 meg or higher Broadband without losses or slowdowns? House has 2 computers but only 1 will be used at any one time.

less the overhead the wireless part can run 27x faster than your broadband on a 54mbps connection

Yes, your broadband connection speed is 2 mbps (million bits per second), so even if you don't get your full 54 mbps max speed over wireless (because of interference or intervening objects, for example) it should still be able to keep up with your broadband speed.

Sure, your entire plan sounds great. I'm glad to see another user switching to wireless, you'll love it, and won't notice any slowdowns (even if you want to use both those computers at the same time).
Everything will work just as fast as you had when it was wired.
