Rows go across- just like seeing a row of ducks in a lake.
Columns go up-like ancient buildings have columns.

row (noun)
1. an arrangement of objects or people side by side in a line; "a row of chairs"

column (noun)
3. a vertical row or list; "add this column of figures"

So, technically, a row can be either up and down OR side to side, but a column is always up and down.
