Did you not water it recently? Did you put it in a cold space? Remember, all plants need sun to live. It may also just be part of a natural proccess. Wilt then grow back. I have a c. cactus as well... And maybe its it's location. Like my friend put it on top of the tv and the cactus died cuz of too much shocks and stuff from the tv. And maybe it's pot is too small? Hope I helped.

A Christmas cactus is called "zygocactus" It is a succulent, not really a cactus, but it needs water about as often as any houseplant. It got the name Christmas cactus because it blooms about holiday time due to how much light it gets and temperature. This year I left mine out till almost freezing in Oct., and it bloomed about a week after being inside! It could also have gotten too dry to be saved, or other problems like too much shock if it was in a store where it wasn't taken care of very well, or some disease in the soil. Youcould try taking off a cutting and rooting it in water to see if you could start another one.

to boot lack of water or too a lot water, coloration differences can aspect out that your plant is lacking a mineral that it desires, meaning your soil might want to choose replacing. in case you haven't replaced the soil in a lengthy time period, i'd benefit this. because you stated the plant is 50+ years previous, i'm curious as to even as the only ideal time is that you've repotted the plant? in case you havent repotted in a lengthy time period, you would possibly want to attempt that. make positive you get all the former soil out of the roots, and attempt to untangle the roots and verify for any roots that are rotting or death, and cut back those off. make positive the pot your using has drainage holes, as christmas cactus might want to be quite overwatered.
