I live in northern virginia, and this winter, not a snowflake has fallen from the sky! I need a snow day. Historical records show that we get 16.6 inches per season. What is up with this? We've got plenty of rain. I know this can't be global warming because OK & TX and the midwest have just endured a crippling ice/snowstorm.

old man winter, where are you!

1) The main cause of this unusual weather is the El Nino currently going on. It's giving some places warmer weather (like New York, and, contrary to what you probably think, Denver) while giving places like Arizona and Texas cooler weather. Overall, however, the temperature is much warmer than usual throughout the world right now.

2) Global warming changes weather patterns, so it could be causing the cool and warm weather. Plus overall, as I already said, it's much warmer than usual (over 1.3 degrees average).

3) Global warming will not get rid of the ice storms for hundreds of years. By the end of the century, we're only looking at 5 degrees warmer. Although that will have a huge affect on some things, it cannot stop the cold fronts.

I'm in Va too and this is driving me crazy!!! Over the past few years, it seems like we've been getting less and less each year. I heard we were supposed to get a lot this winter, but not one flake yet!!! And it would make since for us to get a lot-it's long overdue! I hate school 99.9999% of the time and I always look foward to those snow days, but this year, I have been let down. :(

How do you know it's not due to global warming? I'm pretty sure global warming accounts for not only "warmer" temperatures, but unusual weather patterns, and I believe the ice storms are unusual for that area. Not to say it is for sure global warming, just wouldn't rule it out so fast.
