I am in serious need of help here, people. I've got about 50 problems due tomorrow by 8:00am for Algebra and I've got 7 that I can't answer and I've friggin tried everything! My boyfriend's bein' a d i c k and won't help me. Can anyone help me?

1)Solve using quadratic formula: 8x^2-10x-2=0

2)Solve using quadratic formula by factoring: x(x-6)+9=0

3)Solve using quadratic formula by factoring: 8a^2=3-10a

4)Solve using quadratic formula by factoring: b(6b-7)=10

5)Complete the square: x^2+2x-8=0

6)Complete the square: x^2-3x-4=0

7)Solve using the quadratic formula: x^2+3x+2=0

If it's not too much trouble I'd really like to see how you've done it. Because when it comes up on the test, I'll need to know how to do it.
THANKS!!!

First, find a new boyfriend....second- ask your teacher if there is a tutor at your school that would be willing to help you out..

You need
a). A new boyfriend
b). To review the quadratic formula and how to
complete the square. So let me work one problem
of each type in your list and leave you to do the rest.

1. Solve, using quadratic formula: 8x^2 -10x -2 = 0.

First, let's cancel a 2 to get 4x^2-5x -1 = 0.
In the quadratic formula, a = 4, b = -5 and c = -1
Then one of the roots is
(5 + sqrt(25 +16))/8 = (5+sqrt(41))/8.
The other is (5 -sqrt(41))/8.
Now try number 7.

4. Solve by factoring: b(6b-7) = 10.
Multiply out 6b^2 -7b -10 = 0.
Factor: (b-2 )(6b+5)= 0.
Set each factor to 0 and solve:
b = 2 and b = -5/6.

5. Complete the square:
x^2 + 2x - 8 = 0.
Take half the middle term and square it,
then add it to the expression. Since
you added it to the expression, you
must also subtract it from the expression.
We get
x^2+ 2x + 1 -8-1
or
(x+1)^2 -9
Good luck with the rest!!

BTW Eshwar's solution to problem 1 is wrong.
His discriminant should be 100 + 64,
not 100 - 64.

Review the quadratic formula. When it comes up on the test you have to know it. Memorize it.
Review how to Complete the square:
5) (b/2)^2 = (2/2)^2 = 1
6) (b/2)^2 = (-3/2)^2 = 9/4

)Solve using quadratic formula: 8x^2-10x-2=0
x= ( 10 +- sqrt(100 -4(8)(-2) )/16

2)Solve using quadratic formula by factoring: x(x-6)+9=0
x^2 -6x +9 =0
(x-3)(x-3) =0
(x-3)^2 =0

3)Solve using quadratic formula by factoring: 8a^2=3-10a

4)Solve using quadratic formula by factoring: b(6b-7)=10

5)Complete the square: x^2+2x-8=0
x^2 +2x + 1 -1 -8 =0
(x+1)^2 -9=0
(x+1)^2 =9
x+1 = +- 3
x= 1+3 = 4 or x=1-3 = -2

6)Complete the square: x^2-3x-4=0
x^2 -3x +(3/2)^2 -(3/2)^2 -4 =0
(x-3/2)^2 -9/4 -4 =0

7)Solve using the quadratic formula: x^2+3x+2=0
x=( -3 +- sqrt(9-4(2) )/2
x= (-3 +1)/2= -1 or x= (-3-1)/2 =-2 .

1) 8x^2-10x-2=0
The quadratic formula is (-b(+/-)sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a
You can simplify the equation by dividing throughout by 2
4x^2-5x-1
a=4,b=-5,c=-1
=(5(+/-)sqrt(25+16))/8
=(5(+/-)sqrt(41)/8
=(5(+/-)6.4)/8
so the roots are (5+6.4)/8 and (5-6.4)/8
so the answer is 1.425 and -0.175

2)x(x-6)+9=0
x^2-6x+9=0
The quadratic formula is (-b(+/-)sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a
a=1,b=-6,c=9
=(6(+/-)sqrt(36-36))/2
=(6(+/-)0)/2
So the answer is 3

3)8a^2=3-10a
8a^2+10a-3
The quadratic formula is (-b(+/-)sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a
a=8,b=10,c=-3
=(-10(+/-)sqrt(100+96))/16
=(-10(+/-)sqrt(196))/16
=(-10(+/-)14)/16
so the roots are (-10+14)/16 and (-10-14)/16
=4/16,-24/16 => -3/2
so the answer is 0.25,-1.5

4)b(6b-7)=10
6b^2-7b=10
6b^2-7b-10=0
The quadratic formula is (-b(+/-)sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a
a=6,b=-7,c=-10
=(7(+/-)sqrt(49+240))/12
=(7(+/-)17)/12
so the roots are (7+17)/12 and (7-17)/12
so the answer is 2 and -0.81875

7)x^2+3x+2=0
The quadratic formula is (-b(+/-)sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a
a=1,b=3,c=2
=(-3(+/-)sqrt(9-8))/2
=(-3(+/-)1)/2
so the roots are (-3+1)/2 and (-3-1)/2
so the answer is -1 and -2

I can't help you with the problems 5 and 6 because I don't understand it,other answers might help you.Good luck and try to learn and 'em.Oh yeah it's time to find a new bf.

Now, I am sure you can think up some ways to, um... reward your boyfriend each time he helps you solve a problem. Be creative. I'll bet he takes the bait.
