I wish for all the world that we could just wear signs that say what we are and what, if anything, we're looking for.

Codes (words, jewelry, clothes, etc) have the downside of always being recognized by people we don't want to come out to. Most signals are like car horns: non-directional--you can't actually honk "at" someone, only to the whole neighborhood.

There used to be buzz words that changed from month to month, but when more and more gays were out in the open, that lost popularity. (I thought it was funny when a teenager at a gay bar told about a jeweler using the word du jour "kicky" in front of him and his mother and then gave him a funny look, which the boy thought was embarrassment for having "accidentally" used the word, "because he didn't know I was gay," and I had to tell him, "You little silly, he was hitting on you in front of your mother!").

The Japanese have had the solution for many years: a type of cell phone that you can program with your profile, that sounds a signal when you're near someone with the corresponding setting.
