In 2007, 300 years after the 1707 Act of Union that joined England and Scotland into what is now called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, there are renewed calls for Scotland to break from the union. Although a BBC poll shows that most people in Scotland want to stay in the union, and even more people in England want the Scots to stay, a surprisingly large minority of people on both sides of Hadrian's Wall (an ancient Roman wall that once held the Scots back) would favor a split. What do you think?

Part of me says yes, let Scotland break away from England (thats because im Scottish) but part of me says no as not sure how it would impact on Scotland. Yes there is a lot of hatred between the two sides of the wall but I guess we cant hate each other too badly because if we did the wall would have been built a damned lot higher. Yes the English think all us Scots are drunken idiots who cant play football (soccer to our American friends) and the Scots think the English are bigoted but when you think about it without Scotland then England would not be where it is today as this will show.......

WHA'S LIKE US?

DAMN FEW AND THEY'RE A' DEID

The average englishman in the home he calls a castle, slips into his national costume - a shabby raincoat - patented by Charles Macintosh from Glasgow, Scotland.

En route to his place of work he strides along the english lane, surfaced by John Macadam of Ayr, Scotland.

He drives an english car fitted with tyres invented by John Boyd Dunlop, Veterinary Surgeon of Dreghorn, Scotland.

At the office he receives the mail bearing adhesive stamps invented by John Chalmers, Bookseller and Printer of Dundee, Scotland.

During the day he uses the telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh, Scotland. At home in the evening his daughter pedals her bicycle invented by Kirkpatrick Macmillan, Blacksmith of Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

He watches the news on T.V. an invention of John Logie Baird of Helensburgh, Scotland and hears about the U.S. Navy founded by John Paul Jones of Kirkbean, Scotland.

Nowhere can an englishman turn to escape the ingenuity of the Scots.

He has now been reminded too much of Scotland and in desperation he picks up the Bible, only to find that the first man mentioned in the good book is a Scot - King James VI - who authorised its translation.

He could take to drink but the Scots make the best in the world.

He could take a rifle and end it all but the breech-loading rifle was invented by Captain Patrick Ferguson of Pitfours, Scotland

If he escaped death, he could find himself on an operating table injected with Penecillin, discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming of Darvel, Scotland and given Chloroform, an anaesthetic discovered by Sir James Young Simpson, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist of Bathgate, Scotland.

Out of the anaesthetic he would find no comfort in learning that he was as safe as the Bank Of England founded by William Paterson of Dumfries, Scotland.

Perhaps the only remaining hope would be to get a transfusion of guid Scottish blood which would entitle him to ask -

"WHA'S LIKE US?"

Couldnt resist this one either.

THE STORY OF SCOTLAND

IN THE BEGINNING WHEN GOD WAS CREATING THE WORLD, HE WAS SITTING ON A CLOUD TELLING HIS PAL THE ARCH ANGEL GABRIEL WHAT HE PLANNED FOR SCOTLAND.

"GABBY", SAYS HE, "I'M GOING TO GIVE THIS PLACE HIGH MAJESTIC MOUNTAINS, PURPLE GLENS, SOARING EAGLES, STREAMS LADEN WITH SALMON, GOLDEN FIELDS OF BARLEY FROM WHICH A WHISKY COLOURED NECTAR CAN BE MADE, LUSH SPECTACULAR GOLF COURSES, COAL IN THE GROUND, OIL UNDER THE SEA, .... GAS". "HANG ON, HANG ON", INJECTED THE BOLD GABRIEL, "ARE YOU NOT BEING TOO GENEROUS TO THESE SCOTS?".

BACK CAME THE ALMIGHTY REPLY, "NOT REALLY, WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THE FU**ING NEIGHBOURS I'M GIVING THEM!!!".

British by birth Scottish by the grace of god.

England are currently governed by a capitalist group that does not care about the majority people of the country they only care about making money and foreign investors they drain the poor and make the rich richer, they have bought out properties in England so that in some areas you may have a few rich with masses of land and all the masses of people are all in the same areas then they count up the map of areas to choose who wins, rather then taking into account everyone's vote, so u might have a few million vs a few hundred people and it still counts as 1 area each, in 2010 they managed to regain power by joining with another smaller party after the votes had been counted. they would not be able to win again because people that voted for the smaller party will switch to the party that cares about all the people rather then making money for the rich. but here is the thing Scotland voted for the smaller party, check 2010 stats. so now the current government are trying to manipulate the news and t.v saying people of Scotland want to be independent. if this happens and the people vote for freedom, they can't vote for England and the current government will remain in power for ever, when this happens they will raise interest rates drain the poor even more and Scotland will have no real power in foreign affairs and will become drained too, this is the real story behind the lies.

I as a person of Scottish descent am enamored with the idea of a free Scotland however the country would be ill prepared to deal with its citizenry if this were to happen They are already self governed and that's a good start but the will of the people is all that matters. Forget about polls it's too easy to skew them to get whatever outcome from them you want by creatively asking the questions it should be put to a vote on both sides of the Wall its the only way to truly determine the will of the people.

No, the English Kingdom is just as dictative as America. A lot of people right now are pissed off at their own country in the U.S., they want to leave the Union. The signers of the Declaration of Independence are Scottish. If you are Scottish, you should vote for independence, so it'll be as free as the 1700s America before the Presidency got corrupt.

I believe they should leave well enough alone. William Wallace couldn't get the job done when there was cause. Today there is unity between the factions and strength in numbers. Get the Irish/English issue resolved before you take on more headaches.

This one seems a lot more volatile and should certainly hold precedent over anything about which the Scots and English wish to bicker!

Definitely remain united, but England should have it's own national assembly based on a system of proportional representation within an overall federal framework for the UK.

From what i have read most people want to separate...not stay in the Union.

"...Scottish National Party (SNP) used the anniversary of their union to launch a fresh drive for independence, while some opinion polls suggested a majority of Scots and English want to separate...."

If the people want to, they should. If they don't want to...they shouldn't.

What would happen if the UK got to vote on whether to be in the EU? Could that minority in Scotland be seeing this as their only way out?

The Scots blew it when they let greed choose Robert the Bruce as "leader" and not William "We want independence" Wallace.

Let the people decide.
They're not a stupid race. Some of the greatest minds the world has ever seen have been Scottish born.
I'm sure they'll make the right decision.
