Well, aside from the obvious that everyone has pointed out?

DUH, of course you "volunteer" people! But I think what he was asking was how do you go about it, who do you talk to, and what do you do to be trained.

I can tell you my experience from when I was a volunteer firefighter. I was 21 and stopped by my local fire station on practice night. (Most volunteer departments have a regular night they meet at the station for work crews and training.) I asked what was involved and if their were any openings. There were openings, but I'd have to talk to the Chief. The Chief okayed me and got me some used gear and I was a "probationary" firefighter. I could go to fire scenes, but I wasn't allowed to wear the air packs or go inside a stucture. I had to complete a 36-hour course that was taught on the weekends at a nearby school that had a fire science program. Once that was completed, and I had passed my written test, I was allowed to fully gear up and enter structure fires. (Legally)

In truth, there were months and months of training with the senior members of the department.

It was 6-months before I was allowed to drive any of the apparatus and had to be cleared by a Lt. on each piece.

I also ran squad (ambulance calls) and began my EMT training. The EMT training took a lot longer and was a really hard test to pass, but I had it in about a year.

I also became a fire inspector by going to anohter weeked program that took about 72 hours.

So there ya go, I hope that was what you were looking for.

You just go to your local volunteer fire department and volunteer.

Go to the local firehouse and talk to the chief. Not every fire department has the same criteria.

First you have to volunteer. Then you have to go to school to get training as a firefighter. Then you train some more.
