if the deputy hired you to shoot the sheriff, if the deputy was your friend/mate/relative, or if you just simply liked the deputy, there are many reasons why you would just shoot the sheriff, the sheriff could have been a pain in your backside, he could have pulled you over the night before or he was ugly, thats good enough reasons for me

The act of self-defense (as the shooting of the sherriff was claimed to be) is admissable in court for proving that the act was not criminal, therefore eluding jail time. If the perpetrator has shot the deputy in addition to the sherriff, then the aforementioned proclamation of self-defense would have been not so believable. So either he really shot the sherriff in self-defense (eluding the capital offense) and turned himself in to the deputy to await his day in court, or he shot the sherriff in cold blood, but tried to make it believable by avoiding the additional murder. The listener is left to his own devices to determine the actual intentions of the perpetrator as well as his long term fate.

In the old Bob Marley song it's because Sheriff John Brown came to shoot him, the man in song had no quarrel with deputy. Someone else killed him.

first, we need to agree that somebody must have shot that deputy down, right? wrong? otherwise, why bring it up? it was an obvious conspiracy and part of Jamaican folklore, i guess.

so he admits he shot the sheriff in self defense but wants us to know it wasn't him that shot the deputy down. maybe the deputy wasn't shot. he only means to say he could have shot the deputy if he was a really bad guy but that is evidence he isn't lying. he really shot the sheriff in self defense. or not.

Once you give the sheriff the old "double tap", the deputy, glad of his imminent promotion, will get the message and get off of your case! So why waste rounds on him?

The sheriff is an authority figure, and the deputy is just a working stiff (pun intended).

He's admitting that he shot the sheriff but saying that he wasn't that one that shot the deputy, someone else did.
