Yes, it is one massive landmass, however the continents of Europe and Asia are very different in terms of culture. The Continent of Europe is dominated by Western thought and philosophy (read: Christianity), while Asia is by and large the seat of eastern philosophy/metaphysical religion. If the two continents were combined into Eurasia, as some have suggested, the description would be accurate in physical geography but in culture completely incorrect.

that's like saying USA and Canada are the same or France and Spain. or that every island should be a separate continent because its not "glued" to its nearest land mass!
if Turkey are allowed into the European union then we will see an interesting mix of Asian and european cultures. Going to Istanbul already gives you a glimpse of a vast difference in cultures.you can look over the river and see another continent in the same city.

It's a strictly political distinction...Africa is also joined to Asia, and North and South America are joined as well. It must have something to do with the world view of people hundreds of years ago...

when the ice cap freezes (and whether it ever will again is a hot debate in itself!) you can walk from US to Russia, in which case shouldn't europe, asia, north america and south america all be known as one continent?

That's like saying all the states in the U.S. should be one because they are connected. Each continent has it's own rules, cultures, and people, just as states do here.

You're right, it's one big land mass. Similarly, there should be just one America, covering both the present North and South (and Central).
