Wash them alot and rub them with a cloth when still slightly damp.

I think it's the rubbing that does it. I accidently rubbed some old jeans that were quite faded and had been washed dozens of times and I was very surprised to find that some colour still came off on the cloth.

Don't use bleach - it rots the cotton.

Try using milton sterilising fluid its with the baby stuff in the supermarket it is a really mild bleach. depending on how faded you want them and if you want them faded all over or in different places just scrunch them up bearing in mind that the scrunched bits wont bleach and put them in a bath. try it first on a pair of old jeans or charity shop ones you dont want. there may be some sort of fabric bleach by 'dylon' the people who do the fabric dyes i don't know for sure sorry about the punctuation good luck!

Simple - bleach them. Be VERY careful, though, because you can't correct a mistake of bleaching them too much - once it's done, it's done.

I once tried to bleach out a pair of black jeans into faded black, and wound up with gray jeans instead.

Wash them a million times.

And then get them dirty and worn out by moving in them a lot.

carefully sandpaper them, but it's best to wash them lots of times first to avoid the hassle of sanding.
