As I child (back in 1978) we had a neighbor named Ian (he was 3) and a friend at school named Liam. No one was named that for many years, and now that I might have a child they are pretty popular, so I would not use.

Also, as a big Jane Austen reader in grade school (1970's) I liked the names Emma (from the Novel), and Elinor (from Sense and Sensibility) just because I loved the characters.

Now Emma and Ellie are so popular....... so again I would not use.

I was even telling my friends that Jane and Hazel were due for comeback (i'm always trying to find something not popular) and they laughed.

One of my friends promptly named her baby Jane (it was going to be Alessandra???) and within 6-months Julia Roberts named her baby Hazel!

LOL. I think Goober is still safe. I guess you've been saving that since the Andy Giffith show. Good news -- its not on top 100 yet!

My parents wanted to give me and my sister not so common names... My sister was easy, she was named after my grandmother and the name was out of rotation and not common when it was used. I'm an Andrea, hardly heard before 1980, the year I was born, when it suffered an EXPLOSION in popularity...

They had had it down to Andrea, Zora and Penelope... I keep telling them they should have taken Zora, I'd still be the only one I'd ever met.

Hard to predict what becomes in fashion in any given year. My sister was also in love with the name Emma for the same reason.

Names that I haven't seen in rotation yet are Helen, Ruth, Shirley, Stanley, Lloyd and Larry.

Some names won't be used for a LONG time yet I'm sure to come are Garfield, Chester, Gaylord. Wyonna, Patience and Gertrude. Just a feeling.

I loved the names Carter and Landon when my son was born, but we chose a different name because we started hearing them too much. We went with Jaiden and now, of course, it's a popular name and I hardly hear the other two names.
I think it's best to just pick a name you like and not worry about how common it is. You just never know which way the trends are going to go.

My boys names: Tarryn K, Trayton Clark and Tristyn Webster. The middle names are all family names but the first names were used due to their similarity to their father's name which is Troy. All four names were rarely, if ever, heard before I used them. Tarryn is in high school now and we have met several young ladies who share his name - he had a hard time with that initially.

I receive constant compliments on Trayton's name (we do call him Tray at home - 'cept when he's in trouble lol).

The plan was when we had a girl her name would be similar to mine - THAT never happened!!!

Good luck - it's a fun but difficult decision!!

I liked the name Lily before it was popular.

Personally, I don't want to choose a 'trendy' name, but on the other hand, I hestitate to pick something 'unheard of' if it gets negative reviews.

Unpopular names that I like: Pearl, Opal, Cosette.

Rare but pretty names that I think may become popular again: Ruby, Violet.

Time will tell!

what is this, the Buffy Board?
I've seen Sarah Michelle Gellar mentioned, and the name Xander, and the name Anya.

yes, this happened to me, too. Before my mom died I told her my husband and I had picked names for our future kids. We named our boy the name I told her, and hope to conceive a girl later this year. Only problem, it's since become a celebrity's baby's name: Violet.
and my best friend, who's pregnant now, had always talked about the name Ruby, which would have been great with Violet, but her husband's not so sure he likes it now. : (

My son's first name is Elijah (after Eli Whitney) because a few years ago I didn't no anybody living that had that name except the actor Elijah Wood. Now everyone thinks I did it because it was the trendy think to do, so we just call him Ryan (his middle name). I used to like Jake and Ethan before everybody and their brothers named their sons these names.

well not an unpopular name, but 5 years ago when i named my daughter ava, no one else around here had it. senior women would come up and be like,i haven't heard that name in ages, it used to be popular in the 30's and 40's. well since then, i have seen over 30 avas in our local paper for baby announcements! it wasn't even on the top 100 names in 2002, and now it's around #9!

YES! I love the name Kendall and have ever since Sarah Michelle Gellar played the character Kendall (Erica Kane's daughter) on All My Children. Now I can't use it because it is so darn popular.

I named my son Xander, thinking it was going to be unique...and when he was a couple of months old, I noticed a few pregnant women I knew were going to name their son that also.
My friend and I were pregnant at the same time (both having boys) and I told her my two favorite boys names, Xander being #1...
Unfortunately for my name idea, her son was born a few weeks before mine and guess what she named him? So we both have son's named Xander.
