Well, that's going to depend.

In general, I would say no, but I prefer forms of education that are not competitive. Lots of studies have been done about what happens in competition (just read "Punished by Rewards) and how it can actually cause more problems than positives.

However, if people want academic competitions at their school, why not? I think it's true free choice that is more important than whether there is a competition or not.

Yes, and it always has been even though many students elected not to participate. Many universities will only consider the top 5 or 10% of a high school graduating class for acceptance to their programs.

Law firms line up to make six figure job offers to the top graduates of almost all law schools. The lower graduates hang out their solo shingles and pray for a case in traffic court.

Flatly put, excellence is a relative term; you can't have excellence without having mediocrity and worse. The world rewards excellence, and sometimes even mediocrity. The rest get lost and wonder where the high school glory days went. If you can reach these people at an early age and get them to compete, the bar is raised and more people can be made to climb into excellence.

Good luck.

Definitely not in primary school when children are at an age where they are too young for such stresses. In secondary school, academic competition should be an optional choice but not foisted upon pupils since they have enough to focus on with getting good grades for university. Achieving a good grade to attend university is almost a competition in itself anyway.

The dumbing down of all competition is what is wrong in schools these days - if you ask me. In 'the real world' of work and being an adult we compete for work and in the search for love.

There will always be children who can't compete, or won't compete but these should be encouraged to try their hardest - not stop all the other kids from trying to win. There are winners and losers - there it is, harsh reality.
