jonmcn: interesting... but I think the way to have peace for our great grand children, is to teach them to be peaceful... I don't believe you find peace by fighting for it.. you make peace by giving it... I am great with conflict... I only use it for bounderies... often I walk away.. with my peace in tack

chahcay: you said: only a society of mindless drones would be free of conflict.. I disagree... free of conflict would be found in an accepting open minded society...one where not everyone needs to be right

You are seemingly in the " moralistic fallacy ". It would be so nice if the world was this way; so it becomes that way for you. Conflict is part of human nature, so far, so you need to learn how to deal with that. Remember; those that do not stand for something, will go for anything. If you want peace in the world of you great grand children, work for justice now. To do that will mean that you will be in conflict with some in this world.
PS Teach who you will to be peaceful, but what are you going to do about the predators and parasites that exists among us? They must be opposed, as you can walk away from them, just not that far. Non violent protest only works when you are protesting against the basically just. There are people in the world who will harm you for sheer pleasure or profit. Ignore them; they will not ignore you!

Some people may make a case that conflict is a largely a cultural phenomena. Some cultures promote it, other cultures frown on it. No culture is entirely free of conflict. Even Amish people are known to have fistfights, but they mostly get along nicely. In some cultures loud arguments or violence is taboo, in others it is seen as good, manly, or somehow a positive thing.
For me it is a good idea to keep away from people that tend to promote conflict. You can never entirely avoid them, but you can learn to recognize it and stay away as much as possible.
Sometimes it seems incredible to me that some people seem to turn everything into a conflict all their life, while others realize that you are most likely to get what you want by without resorting to conflicts. Maybe it is a matter of emotional maturity.

Loving peace and disliking conflicts are good traits. However, sometimes when wrongs are being committed and no peaceful means to stop them are possible, conflicts are preferred over submission or resignation.
At the start of WW II, when Nazi Germany are crushing one European country after another and Imperial Japan was committing similar aggressions and war crimes in Asia; both Britain (under Chamberlain) and the US remained uninvolved as we were hoping that no harms will come to us if we'd just be peaceful; open minded to Germany's and Japan's needs for expansions in acceptance their roles in Europe and Asia.
Well, you know happened then. After Hitler took over much of Western Europe; he started the air war over Britain; bombing it day and night, trying to force its capitulation. Japan then attacked US installations in Hawaii, the Philippines and Guam and was heading down to Australia and West to India...Avoiding conflicts sometimes leads to larger ones with more dired consequences.
There are of course, truly self-defense measures on the parts of the US and Britain during WW II and faulty reasons to go to war as in Vietnam and Iraq. So, I'm not saying every claim for self-defense is authentic. However, there are times when we have to stand up and face conflicts to stop further aggression.
Rosa Parks was a peaceful woman but she didn't shy from conflicts when the bus driver told her to move to the back of the bus. Her firm stand agains injustice forced a confrontation with the forces of segregation but it also awakened a nation and served to further the cause of liberty.

Most conflicts can be avoided or walked away from. However, while I would like to have a conflict-free life, that is not reality. There are sometimes when there are serious threats to your values and standards or to those of people whom you love or who are without a voice. We must speak up sometimes, but pick those battles very very carefully.

conflict means that different people have different ideas. Our idiotic society is trying to make us believe that thinking differently and expressing that is wrong. how pathetic!
