From my understanding, most of the criticism of the hangings have come from other countries, not members of either Sunni or Shiite groups in Iraq.

The major thing here is that while we agree it is wrong for them to cut the heads off of humans, they have never claimed the moral high ground in war. They have always said that it is war and in war you do these things to stop an enemy (the US). We have claimed the high ground. We continue to claim the high ground even now.

And if you want the psychological benefit of the moral high ground (people all over supporting you because you are trying to benefit society and all humanity as a whole), then you must do the work and maintain the proper image to keep that image of having the moral high ground. That means doing your best to limit the death and suffering to those who deserve it (how many Iraqi civilians and how many American troopers have died because Bush refuses to change course?); that means gaining support of those who can help us with diplomacy (not just Iran and Syria--though it is important we work with them--but with the other countries of the world as well).

I understand the Bush administration feels diplomacy would require that they give up something in dignity (since they have painted themselves in a corner by refusing to compromise from the start), but if it will help save more American troops and Iraqi civilians and restore order then you do what is necessary (even self-abasement) to save other humans. What's more important, Bush's dignity or the lives of other humans?

And most of all (and where your question eventually leads), maintaining the dignity and respect for others that you claim is sorely lacking in your enemies. Bush and his administration say the Iraqi insurgency is made up of those who are evil because they have no respect for the dignity of others, they torture and kill others for their own benefit. I agree with that assessment. But George Bush can't very well talk if we are torturing at Guantanamo Bay, if we are a major contributor to the Iraqi civilian deaths, and if we support the government of Nouri al-Maliki if he is not going to respect the dignity of others (forcible removal of a head from a body with a noose).

That the insurgents do it to us is irrelavent in this particular discussion. They do it and because of that they are evil, and you will not find one person who disagrees with that. But we can't call them evil for doing it if we are going to do it too and call ourselves good. We must change our tactics if only so that we can have the moral high ground again. You may see it as fair to do to them what they do to us (and incidentally I agree with you, it is fair); but we cannot claim moral superiority for it or we would be hypocrites.

how did you know?

there is no group that acts in a singular, all them sunnis have their own personal reasons for doing their wild and crazy things, but one of the more common reasons for rioting is being silly, sunni or not

I guess this is why most US states have decided to use the gas chamber, electric chair, or lethal injection. It looks better, even if it's not as fast.
