Why bother... You have a good snapshot and that is the best shot one can have! A good wrist shot is nice to have too but a slapshot is not the best shot so do not even worry about it. Accentuate your strengths!

The new composite sticks help with the speed of a slap shot as they have a whip effect and create faster speeds. That is why most NHL players use them even if they break more often than wood sticks. The only other thing I can suggest is to get a bucket of pucks and shoot slap shots until you are tired. Then start again the next day. Keep this up until your shot improves. Your comment about the slap shot skimming on the ice is interesting because I rarely see a slap shot that is not off the ice even a little. A slap shot from the point that was along the ice would be too easy to block so if your slap shot is good off the ice you may not need to improve.

Try to move the puck back further, as in what part of your swing is contacting the puck like golf almost. also when you follow through with a slapper point the tip of your blade where you want the puck to go. keep practicing, it's all about form not so much strength, though it helps.
