The basic unit is called a bit (binary digit). Each bit has an electronic switch, or gate. If the gate is open the bit is on and electricity can go through. The computer reads on or open switches as a number 1. If the gate is closed or off, the electricity is blocked and the computer reads off bits as 0.
Numbers in parenthesis mean "to the power" - 2(7) - 2 to the 7th power.

I personally think that the best computer in the world is the best that feed your needs .
40 Gb holds a ton of information if you are only using your computer for writing reports and cheking your e-mail.
On the other hand If you use your computer for games and really serious downloading stuff then 40 Gb its a small hd.

It depends wat is your use if you are a normal user for example you just use your computer to send and receive e-mails, listen to music, playing games not Storing games, do some work that is ideal for you.
On 40 GB Hardisk you can Install Windows XP, Microsoft Office (any version) all you necessary programs and you can still have atleast 25 GB left.

Not great for a stand alone computer. But that also depends on what you want to use the computer for.
If you want to use the computer for office applications, internet access and email etc then that will probably be fine.
However if you wish to use the computer for games, multimedia type applications or movie editing then 250GB would be the minimum size you should choose.

You mean hard disk space? It's probably the very minimum you'd want to even consider if you were buying a new machine. That said, if you don't store a lot of heavy-duty video, pictures, music, etc. large files, it should be enough to install a modern operating system and a fair number of applications, and still have plenty left for files and virtual memory etc.

If all you are doing is getting on the internet, working with ms office, email. stuff like thiat. 40 gigs is more than plenty enough.
if you store music on your computer, it wont take too long to fill up.
if you store movies and videos itl only take a couple days to fill up.
40 gigs will be about 6 inches, by about 4 or so inches by about 1 inch.
not encluding another quarter of a centimeter because of the screws holding it in.
if its a laptop 40 gigs, itl be about 3.5 inch, by about 4 or so inch, by about a quarter inch.
plus screws.

Not a lot, my Ipod has got double that so you could store 10000 songs. You really want at least 160gb on a computer nowadays. Mine has 620gb and i'm gonna need some more soon.

Depends on what your using the pc for. If you are just surfing & email it's plenty even if you have tons of programs. If you are downloading everything you can find & have tons of music it won't be enough.
I have a 20g on my basic pc & I have literally ton's of files from work & I am nowhere near close to using all the space. I also have ton's of programs that I use for work. But, I don't download movies or music.
