If my next baby is a girl, I was thinking of naming her after my mom, sort of. My mom's name is Sally. I don't want a daughter named Sally, but if I move the first letter to the end, I get Allys, and would pronounce it "Alice".
Is this too weird of a spelling? Would people have a hard time with the pronunciation? Do you think my mom would feel bad because it says "your name is not good enough, I'm going to change it"?
I'm really not into weird names, or weird spellings of names, but I wanted to somehow honor my mom (she does not have a middle name, nor do I, nor will the future daughter).
Thanks!

My mom's maiden name is Russell. Not really feminine.

I like it!:)
Yes, people may mispronounce it.
I had to correct people all my life because I have a unique spelling for my name. It never bothered me. I wouldn't change the unique spelling of my name for anything in this world:)
It's your decision to make, but I like it alot!! and by the way, it was creative for you to come up w/ Allys:)

I don't think your mom will be offended and if she is tell her you want your daughter to have her own identity. The spellings not too bad but just remember that people will spell it wrong a lot. This could be annoying to the child when she gets older. go with a name you love. do you like the name Allys? if you do go with it another way to pay tribute to your mother is to make Sally the middle name. (which i know you dont want but hey, it works)

Your right, Russel isn't too feminine.
But your mom i'm sure would be honored either way, Sally, or Allys. She would definetly approve of Alice, too. But I think people would get that Allys was pronounced Alice. So I'd give it a shot. And Allys is such a pretty name, your mom would love it!

I personally don't like when people give weird spellings to their children's names. It makes it tough on the child having to always correct the pronunciation. I do think it's nice to want to honor your mom. Have you thought of giving the child Sally as a middle name? Other suggestions would be to give your child your mom's maiden name as her middle name, or if your mother's middle name is something you like better use that for your daughter.
Hope that helps.

Definitely do not name your daughter Allys, she will have to explain the spelling of her name for the rest of her life. If you do not like the name Sally then maybe give her a name that starts in S so your daughter and mother will have the same initials.

Honestly, I like Allys. It's pretty and not so unique that people will have no clue how to pronounce it. If you want something more traditional though, you can name the baby Sarah. Sally is a form of Sarah, so it'd be inspired by your mom, but not the same name.

Don't do "cute things" with your child's name. Do not give them odd names, hard names to pronounce, spell, or even understand.
It might seem cute when they are a baby but remember this person will become an adult and seek jobs, a spouse, a life.
To have an odd name will hinder this process greatly. Human Resource stats show that up to 80% of people are passed over for jobs strictly based on their name alone.
How many "odd named" people do you hear of being rich, ceo's, big wigs in corporate world, etc. And most actors don't go by their real names, they make up "fake names" that are odd.
Think of your baby's future with every thought and step as this baby will be an adult and have to live with every decision you make. Don't make the wrong ones.
Alley would be a better choice, prounced as its spelled.

Allys sounds a lot like allie with an s on the end. Maybe her name can be some form of Sally.. Salene maybe? Sally is a nice name too, a little old fashioned maybe, but it's still nice.

I think if you go the "inspired route" I prefer Allyssa, just easier to pronounce and you could call her Alice if thats what you want (I like the name Alyce).
But nothing wrong with Sally. Its a lot like Molly, Polly, Ellie, Susie, Sousie, Sadie that are popular still.
Or you could leave it in the middle or hyphenate it.
Sally-Ann
Sallie-Jo
Sally-Rose
Mia Sally
Genevieve Sally
Meredith Sally
Frances Sally
Eva-Marie Sally
Anna-Laura Sally
Camryn Sally

I just went to baby name sites. Did you know Sally means Princess!! Anyway, I played around at other possibilities, and just dropped the S - Ally, and found out that Ally - means "secret way", maybe you could go with that, and tell your Mom its your "secret way" of naming her after her grandmother. Just an idea.
the other Idea I had, is what is your mothers maiden name?

I don't think you should give her a name with an odd spelling. People won't "get it" most of the time and your daughter may not like it.
There certain is a nice quality about a unique name, but not a common name with a unique spelling.
Honestly, I think Sally is too old fashioned.
"Allys" hmmm... sounds like a prescription drug.
But it's certainly better than "Posh"...
