He was going on a walkabout in the Australian outback. This was to be an authentic walkabout that would allow people to use their survival skills in real situations. So he brought his knives. Obviously he couldn't just throw a few in his carry-on. So he put them in his nice box (as anyone who actually takes care of their knives would) to protect them and put them in his checked baggage- which is completely legal. I know- i travel on airplanes- and I have taken my knives with me many times.

In short he had knives because he was going to be "surviving" in the outback.

Well he did spend time in the army maybe he likes to be protected at all times but I'm not sure. But once again who is actually safe on the island, even i would carry a knife or even a gun:)

He had planned on going on his Walkabout in the outback. He was turned down due to the fact he was in a wheelchair.

He took them with him for his Walkabout experience however he was declined to go on this Walkabout in the end which is why he was on the plane back home. He checked them he said so the people in charge of the plane let them on.

I'm pretty sure that he took them with him to go on the walkabout. When they refused to let him on the hunt due to his disability he took them back with him, thus them being on the plane.

I think it's because he was planning on going on that 'walkabout' tour revealed in episode 4 of season 1, and it possibly had something to do with hunting...

He was really a company representative for a blade firm, the knives were his `travelling Salesman` sales samples, which he res cured from the plane wreck.
