Why are so many people hell bent on making cigarettes illegal? People who smoke know the risks they are taking. They should have the right to light up in their homes or cars if they so chose. I'm not even a smoker, and my grandma died from lung cancer, but she always swore she would never give up smoking. It was "her right to smoke, drink, gamble and curse" as she would always say. What about alcohol? It also has risks, but we can still chose whether or not we want to drink it. I think the goverment needs to butt out of our lives more. I mean geez, they've even tried to ban fried foods!!! People know the risks involved with doing things that are bad for their health and if they still want to do it, then so be it. Personally, I enjoy scarfing down a big juicy cheeseburger, and order of fries and a beer every now and then. Pretty soon we won't even be able to pick what color underwear to put on in the morning. Does anyone else feel the same way?

To see what is happening here, look to the past. Any government that was set up even the littlest bit likes ours is, which is to say a government based on laws can not ever get away from making more and more laws, even to the point of creating more laws to reduce the amount of freedom we Free Americans are supposed to have. It is impossible for our elected officials to create these laws without out permission, right? Then why can't I smoke in my favorite restaurant? Yes, smoking stinks and is bad for you. But it should be my decision to smoke or not, and to smoke where I want. Alcohol is deadly, more so than tobacco in the amount of deaths attributed to drunk driving and violence. And to see the government getting into the ingredients of the food I choose to eat is way too much. I DID NOT VOTE FOR THAT! we ought to be screaming these words from the tops of the tallest buildings. WHEN WAS THE VOTE TAKEN? I want to know, and as a citizen, I want my right to say my piece on the subject.
Government can't help making new laws. And remember this, friends, neighbors, voters, and drummers everywhere: For every vote like those listed above, you KNOW there is BIG MONEY trading hands somewhere.
If you think otherwise, you have my sincerest sympathy.
Thanks for letting me answer this!

Because there is a large group of people in this country who have confused the concepts of "government" and "parent".

While there is a certain public good to be derived from some legislation (people with chronic illnesses like those caused by smoking and obesity, or by accidents while not wearing seat belts for instance - are a drain on the health care system) many people take it too far and want government to manage every thing the citizens do.

People like this (mostly liberals, but Conservatives are guilty of it in certain areas) think they are helping people, but really they are telling them they are too stupid to think for themselves.

Banning high fat food...ummm...that's crossing the line. However the ciggarette issue has some merit.
A smoker does choose to smoke..what they don't realize is with that first ciggarette comes a lifetime of slavery. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug that is very hard to escape.
I think that certain governing is acceptable in order to educate and protect our children from this monster.

YES! Thank you, I feel exactly the same. What the hell ever happened to freedom?? So far, here, they are banned in restaurants, but it's progressing and probably will end up that you will only be allowed to smoke in your room under your dang sheets! I cannot stand this, and I agree people have the RIGHT to do as they please, everyone who lights a cig knows the consequences.
Much love.
