I am 29 weeks with my first pregnancy and have had a lousy cold for the past week. My midwife, doctor and pharmasist have all told me that except for paracetamol there is nothing they would recommend taking for it as very little has been tested and declared safe for pregnant women.

I have all the usual cold symptoms; sore throat, hacking cough, bunged up nose and am getting even less sleep than usual.

Anyone out there got any tips or been through similar. I am also worried that all the coughing and sneezing will hurt the baby or the baby will ' catch' my stinking cold; so any reassurance from the sisterhood on this good too!

I had the same problem with my 2nd pregnancy. I coughed so hard i cracked a rib. Just have to grin and bear it and do what the doctor says. You can take benadryl it will help with the bunged up nose, throat and sleep. Cough drops and vapo rub for the cough. Just hang in there, it will eventually go away. Good luck and God bless!

I'm 14 weeks with my second child and let me tell you a cold while being pregnant is never fun. Some suggestions to help relieve your symptoms would be:
hot tea for the sore throat, and it will help some of the coughing, preferably decaffinated, a humidifier will help the stuffy dry nose, which is also caused by a change in hormones, and take a tylenol for some added relief it will also help you rest. Pretty much any tylenol product with acetaminophen is safe while your pregnant. And trust me you can sneeze and cough all you want the baby will be safely cushioned in the womb.

Firstly the baby will be fine.

I do feel for you but, they`re right, just paracetamol (it will take you temperature down).

Try hot honey and lemon with the paracetamol, which will soothe your throat. Keep your fluid intake up.

You can also buy vicks in the jar and put some on a tissue to help your breathing. If this cold lasts more than a week then you need to go back to your doctor.

Get well soon.

Your baby won't catch your cold.
Try some Viks vapor rub on your neck and chest and also melt some in a bowl of boiling water and inhale the steam.
You can suck glycerine tablets for your sore throat. They sell Blackcurrent ones in Boots.
Otherwise, you just have to put up with it I'm afraid. I know how miserable it is because I had a stinking cold last year when I was pregnant and had to sit exams at the time.

You may find that putting a few drops of eucalyptus oil in your room helps to ease the symptoms. It is particularly good at relieving stuffy head and sinus pain. This was recommended, and worked, for my wife in her first pregnancy.

The cold virus cannot pass through the uterine wall and placenta, so your baby will be unaffected.

Your coughing and hacking may annoy your baby, in the same way as noisy neighbours do, but he/she will turn away from any unpleasant noises!

I can promise you the baby will not catch your cold. Just take good care of your self and get plenty or rest and keep lots of fluids in you and you should befine. If it gets any worse go back to the doctor you may be developing an upper respiratory bacterial infection brought on by the cold. There are certain antibiotics out there that are safe during pregnancy if needed.

I have the same thing right now, but I am not worried about it hurting the baby, this is my third pregnancy. I so far have only taken tylenol for the sore throat and trying to let everything else take care of itself.

Don't worry; the baby can't "catch" your cold. He or she is blissfully unaware of your misery right now.
My doctor told me that I could take regular Sudafed and regular strength Tylenol for my cold. She also told me to use "Simply Saline" spray twice a day (or as needed). My cold turned into a sinus infection, so it's really important to try to nip colds in the early stages instead of letting them fester (but I hate taking medicine, so they always get bad). Don't take the Sudafed if you are prone to heart palpitations, however.

I had a stinking chilly spectacular in the previous i found out i exchange into pregnant with my first. and you're spectacular, your immune device is decreased once you're pregnant to end your physique from attacking the infant, so it is lots greater handy for pregnant women to %. up colds. a chilly in itself isn't a symptom, besides the undeniable fact that it must be that your immune device is down while you're pregnant.

I was sick 3 times the last time I was pregnant. Robutissen (sp?) is okay to take. I also boiled water on the stove and inhaled it. It seemed to help the congestion.

Your symptoms won't hurt the baby, and the baby won't get sick....
