well I want to get a pet rat, but about once a month I go away for about a week at a time.. I have a pet cat right now and he doesnt seem to mind, I just leave alot of extra food out for him and hes fine.... can you do that with a pet rat? or do I need someone to come look after him?

A couple of days maybe, but a week is too long to leave a rat alone.

It would be best to have someone come in and check on him *at least* once a day, or board your rat at a pet store set up for that purpose. Anything could happen in your absence, a leaky water bottle, running out of food, dirty bedding that needs to be cleaned. Injury and his safety would also be a concern.

Since I have too many rats to board out I always get a friend in to look after them.

Rats have a tendancy to over eat. If you leave a weeks worth of food, it will be gone in about 3 days. For a weeks trip, you would need someone to come in at least once, if not twice while you were gone.

They're very sweet pets!

You'll have to get someone to come look after your rat if you plan on leaving. I have 2 rats, and 2 food bowls in their cage, and I have to fill them both every day. If you leave your rat alone for a week chances are you'll come home to a very hungry/angry rat. Keep in mind, your cat gets to roam the house when youre away. Your rat will be stuck in his cage for that entire week with no socialization, and thats not very nice. You should arrange for someone to come over and play with him for a while every day..or atLEAST every other day..but if its going to be every other day, monitor your rat for a while, see how much food he goes through in 2 days..you want to make sure he always has food available to him. The best thing would be to see if someone could take him and his cage while youre away, so he always has people around. Imagine being locked in your room for a week with only food and water, It'd get pretty lonely.

as long as you clean his cage really good right before you leave and give him plenty of food and water, and make sure you put him in a place where your cat can't get to him then he'll be fine.

i think you can do that. just leave food and water. it should be fine. They don't require much. ASk the pet store people when you go to buy it to be sure.
