I just got back from a free consultation and was told it would cost nme $980.00 just in attorneys fees plus a 299.00 filing fee.I cant come up with that much money! My case really shouldnt be complicated.Im about 18,000.00 in debt and the only thing they could possibly take from me is my car( a 96 ford explorer w/ 175000 miles valued at about 2,800) I dont own anything else like property ect. Now can anyone tell me how do I go about this?

I have done a bankruptcy on my own, it is not that hard. You can find the forms on the internet if you look hard enough. I know in Texas they have tightened up the requirements, and so now it is harder to file. You might want to find out that first.

As others have stated, if you put this in a category such as Finance it may have received better attention than under the Laptops category.
Declaring bankruptcy should always be the last resort. The issue with a bankruptcy is that it will stay with your for at least 5-7 years, during which time you are not likely to qualify for personal loans, car financing, or a mortgage.
Even if you do not have anything but a car, they can sieze your stereo, furniture, jewelry, just about anything except clothing I believe.
They may also be able to garnish your wages. If you are working presently making say $200 a week, they may ask the bankruptcy courts to take $50 per week over the next X weeks to repay part of the debt.
I would recommend you consult with your bank or a debt counseller. They may be able to advise on how you can adjust your payments or lower the interest rates you are paying so you can get the debt paid off earlier.
I did this when I was stuck with a $7000 debt from a co-signed personal loan. The person I co-signed for left me holding the bag for the loan, and my bank manager was helpful in getting the high-interest loan (from a finance company) converted to a personal line of credit at my bank. This helped me pay off the debt in 18 months instead of four years as it was originally going to take.

You are NOT that in debt! Talk to who you have debt with. Look at the bookstore for books that illustrate how to get your debt lowered. Negotiate lower APRs, etc. Take on another job, anything....just don't be lazy and declare bankruptcy! Look up the new Bankruptcy laws, it's not as easy to do anymore!

do NOT file for it. Go to www.daveramsey.com and maybe get his book called "total money makeover" or listen to a podcast of his shows, for real. Ive listened to him for a long time and its not worth filing. I almost did it myself. Im still not out of it, but for real, this guy is the real deal. U can find that book on Ebay too buy the way.
