There is a great deal on a laptop at Fry's electronics with an 333mhz AMD Turion 64 processor and I'm wondering if it's a good computer or not. I usually only trust anything Intel Pentium but I have been in the market for a laptop for so long and am anxious to find one. With laptops being so expensive nowadays I want to get my money's worth and not pay over $1200 for one that I most likely won't use all the bells and whistles too. I mainly want a laptop for portability, to access the internet and to do some minor word processing. Email me with possibilities. Thanks.

Core Duo, by far.

Reasons:
*Better speed-step
*Faster
*Two cores
*Consumes less power

An AMD Turlon 64 is a fairly old design, in computing terms, roughly equivalent to the Pentium 4M designs of late 05/early 06. Turlon 64 CPUs are the 'previous generation' notebook processor, and were replaced in (was it April?) 2006, by the Turlon 64 X2 line.

Turlon 64 cpus were a high value bang-for-the-buck in their day, but they're a little dated here in Jan 07'. Still, for your stated purposes (general portability, Internet/Browsing, and Word Processing), these are good-performing CPUs and very good values for your limited budget.

Turlon 64s will run WinXP very well (like all newer CPUs will these days), and the performance gains from the far more powerful Intel Core processors are not justified by your stated purposes or budget.

You'll enjoy more consistent performance by choosing a system w/ 1GB or more of memory and a quick hard drive.

AMD's website shows these systems for comparison:

Core 2 Duo uses dual processor in single chip also with athlon dual core (named atlon X2 ) well, for now, core2duo have better performance compared to athlon X2, for either gaming/entertainment or office works. but the core2duo proce is definitely more expensive compare to amd procesor in the same class. centrino/centrino duo is intel platform in laptop, it mean the laptop is equiped with intel mobile procesor, intel chipset, and intel wireless adapter, thus guarantee it's hardware compatibility. while turion is amd platform for laptop, it only use amd mobile procesor, and another hardware come from various manufacturer

The Core Duo is a different processor teechnology so you cannot compare apples to apples. The Intel choice would be the way to go.

While the Turion is a great little CPU, the core duo is better, faster, and more bang for your buck.

AMD sucks...they clock the speed...therefore making your system unstable....

Get the Pentium....

You do get what you pay for....Toshiba has been the number one laptop for a couple of years now....my friend mainly fixes alot of e-machines, Dells, HP's, and Compaqs.....these do suck I've known to many people with problems with those...

duo core all the way

AMD turion is becoming obsolete and can't compete with the speeds of the duo core.

If you only do the things you tell us I would recommend a secondhand one since its overkill to buy yourself a up to date laptop.
An Apple G4 would be a great machine.
Cheers
