You need to get the water out of the carpet. It may already have damaged the floor underneath, in which case the carpet is the least of your problems. I would call someone like Master Clean to suck out the water and evaluate the floor.

If the washer flooded more than three days prior, there are steps to take. First of all, you should have never tried to clean this your self. A normal shop vac does not have the capacity or the suction to penetrate the carpet and pad. Pull your carpet back if you have a pad and check to see if the pad is wet. also check your crawl space to see if there is any insulation that would be holding the moisture in. Call a water restoration company. They have probes and meters to tell exactly where the water moisture is in your flooring and walls. Water will wick up the drywall so it is good to check them. If you don't want to get a third party involved, i.e. insurance or restoration company, close the doors of the room affected with a Dehumidifier running and fans blowing on carpet. Then replace the padding. The best solution, however, is to call your insurance company and have them recommend a water restoration company in your area. This will prevent future deterioration and mold in your home.

Why on earth would you have a washing machine next to a carpet in the first place when something like this is bound to happen.
You can either get a wet/dry hoover and suck-up the spillage then shampoo the carpet so it will not smell, or take the carpet up plus under-lay, this method would mean buying a new carpet with the insurance money and having the washing machine repaired so it will not empty its contents all over the floor again.
lets just hope you had the sense to be insured in the first place because both items are not going to be cheap.

You could hire a dehumidifier to dry the carpet out, it really depends on what the carpet is made of and how wet it is, or you could buy the silica crystals that you can buy from Halfords they help to dry out touring caravans.

Wet vac & or steam clean it. Make sure you have good heat & ventilation so it can dry quickly.

Like the others said, you might need to contact your insurer & have a pro check to make sure there's no floor damage or mold/mildew in the padding.

You have mold......or you soon will.........

You need to rip up the carpet and the padding and throw it out and replace it. I hope your floor hasn't been damaged.

sorry....I know that's not what you need to hear right now......but mold can make you very sick......so it's better to do the right thing now rather than later.
