Being dyslexic I have trouble spelling, but have made a habit of using spell check. Often tripping on words such as were and where, and there and their.

And I agree with you that if spell check is available then we should use it. At lest if I trip on the correct word as above, at lest I spelt it correctly.

I've always been a good speller. Even won spelling bees when I was in grade school. That was several decades ago, but I'm still good. It never hurts to use Spell Check though even though I'm sure of myself.

It seems to me that people forget the spell check. But it does get me that people ask / answer questions and the spelling is wrong. I have better things to do than wounder what someone is trying to say.

My standard answer: Far too many barely-literate people who can hardly type and have poor spelling, grammar and punctuation skills, now have access to a computer and an Internet connection.
Few would ever put pen to paper and I fear modern communication systems (cell phones with text messaging, computers and palm devises) has spawned a generation of semi-illiterate people.
Interestingly enough, it seems people who have difficulty putting a simple sentence together, often hit the `thumbs-down' button
when they see a well-composed answer.

I think it's a genetic predisposition to deny that you are unable to spell and therefore refuse to use spell check
