Clapton's inspiration for the song came as he grew impatient for Boyd to finish dressing for a party that they were both going to.

"Wonderful Tonight" was indeed written for Patti Boyd, but by this time she was Clapton's wife. "Layla" (recorded by Eric Clapton under the name Derek and The Dominoes) was also written for Boyd at the time she was married to George Harrison.
Boyd divorced Harrison in 1977 and married Clapton two years later, divorcing in 1989.

Had to be her. They hooked up in the mid 70s & married in '79. The song came out in '77 or '78.

It WAS George Harrisons wife he wrote it about...Layla was writen about his mums cat (probably), and tears in heaven was written about his son falling from an apartment window.
....I mighta made that bit up about the cat though...(cough)
