You may need quite a lot of space to grow enough flowers for all year round displays.

If you're new to gardening, don't worry, take it slowly and start with little projects to build up your confidence.

Getting a good gardening book will help a lot. If you've got the sort of weather we're getting where I live, then reading's about all you can get done at the moment. Borrow some books from friends or the library. Books on basic gardening, books on what plant put where in the garden, or books with loads of plant types with good photo illustrations to help.

Read some gardening magazines, watch the gardening programmes on the t.v and soak up as much advice as you can.

Start with your soil. Good soil equals healthy plants!
Invest as much time as possible into weeding it, digging it over, digging in some manure or compost, generally improving the quality. Roses in particular are hungry plants that will really appreciate good rich soil. They can be bought and planted now as long as the soil isn't frozen or under water. You'll probably get them cheaper at this time of year (in the UK) as many of the big stores will want to sell them cheap before the new stock in the Spring. There are lots of types of Roses though, so check carefully that you're buying a good bushy type with long, strong stems and the flower type you want.

But read, read, read! Look up your roses and other plants for cut flowers etc. Find out whether your garden is in shade, full sun etc and then see if the plants you want to grow like shade or sun etc. Try to find out what soil type you have and then look up plants that suit it. For instance your soil might be chalky or heavy clay.

The main thing is not to get daunted! Enjoy your successes and don't worry about the failures. Every gardener is learning daily even the pro's. Sow some seeds, plant some plants, enjoy your garden.

Hope you have a lot of success.

first off, to be a truly successful florist, you need a decent sized nursery. not just a green house. and you will need a large variety. though roses and lillies are always popular, you will also want some hyacinth, begonias, and maybe some tulips. anything that has a long, straight stem and looks good in a vase or arrangement. it's going to take some time to get everything to where you want it, but when you do get there, it will be worth it.

Here's a great resource with good advice, including your "zone" so you know what plants will grow where you live:

When ever I have garden questions I go to "Dave's Garden" on the web. It is a great place to find "ANY" information on plants/gardening you may be looking for.
