Strength of metals is normally measured by the tensile strength as the main measure although this is not the only property as hardness is another big factor. Basically, iron is soft and steel is hard. Plain iron is stretchy and does not corrode quickly, whereas steel is much stiffer and corrodes more quickly. The tensile strength of cold worked iron is about half that of an average steel, likewise the hardness is about half that of steel too. Pure iron, which is rarely used, is even weaker and softer again and a bit more like softer materials like copper and aluminium. Where confusion comes in is that there is another iron - Cast Iron - which is totally different to both iron and steel. Cast iron is very hard and tough but incredibly brittle so its properties are very different.

Steel is made from iron and alloys. There are many different types. Some you can cut though like butter with a cutting torch and others you need a plasma cutter. It depends on how much carbon, chromium and molydmium and other alloys are in them. A sledge hammer would be made from a low alloy variety. It allows for wear and tear and the steel actually gets stronger the more times you hit it. If it were made from high-alloys, it would crack. Roll cages use stronger steel made and thus you get the term chome-moly.

It depends on the steel, and the application. A steel fireplace grill is usually a bad idea because it can become very brittle whereas iron does not. But an iron sink would rust away in a few months.

Generally steel. Steel is made from a combination of iron and other materials that are added to change the properties of the iron.

Your hubby is right Steel has a higher chemical makeup than Iron making it stronger and more durable. Iron has a lot of chemical impurities in it that make it weaker

welllllll.....
steel is made from iron and has more tensile strength, but is usually more brittle. i say usually because there are many different alloys of steel and they're none the same.
