I am 40 weeks and 4 days pregnant. They are opting to soften my cervix come Friday (41 weeks) because it is still completely closed. What should I expect?

you mean to induce you? What they did for me was too sitck their hand inside your vag... and spread this gel stuff all over inside... then they are done... it is uncomfortable

It might send you into labor or might not... First they put protaglandin hormone inside you against your cervix, either by gel form or pill. They will monitor you for a few hours & if you haven't started labor they will send you home. I hope that you do not think you are late...Average 1st pregnancy is 41 weeks 1 day, and pregnancies with prior births average 40 weeks 3 days...You can go past that safley by 2 weeks!!! Avoid induction!!! It puts you at a higher risk for needing c-section & can cause fetal distress. I had that done with my second pregnany and they did the procedure(very minimal) and than they said I had to stay in the hospital for evaluation until 8am the next morning. I had my daughter at 9:05am.
