not a pap smear. I have cancerous cells and they need to take a large biopsy. The pap is just a tiny pinch this is supposed to be way beyond that.

ive had a cervical biopsy before and it didnt hurt at all. just a little pinch if anything. it didnt really hurt later either - mild cramps is all. doctors are hesitant to prescribe pain medication these days because of how often people abuse them.

it might be a good idea to take some ibuprofen beforehand

since you added details - a pap smear is a scraping of the cervix. when they do a biopsy they take a SMALL sample, even if the area in question is large. if the tiny bit of tissue they take comes back from the lab and your doctor wants to remove the entire area of tissue that is affected they will do a LEEP procedure. a LEEP is where they take layers of tissue from the entire cervix and they usually put you to sleep for that (they did me anyway) even afterwards it doesnt hurt - just cramps, and you discharge for a few weeks. tons of people get this done and its not that bad, i promise.

RE:
How painful is a cervical biopsy and why do they not offer pain meds?

They don't offer pain meds because its not that painful. You'll feel a couple of pinches, some mild to moderate cramping and that's it. You might bleed and have some period-like cramps for a day or two; nothing that Midol or Motrin won't handle.

The biopsy itself is not painful. You feel pain afterwards. My doctor did offer meds, but another over- the- counter med. could've been just as effective. The key for me was to totally relax and follow the doctor's orders.

You will have mild pain. It also depends on what you threshhold for pain is. It will be a pinch and then you'll have some cramping afterwards. I also had some spotting. They recoomend not to have intercourse for a few days afterwards as well. Be prepared for slight pain though, the doctor did not warn me and it caught me completely off guard.

I have just attempted to have a cervical biopsy done in the Dr's office...I could not handle the pain, he had to stop, and will do it under general anesthesia...It is extremely painful...If your Dr is a man, he cannot possibly understand what it feels like....my regular Dr ( who is in practice with my gyno) is female, my gyno a male...when I told her what had happened with my biopsy and I related to her that my other Dr seemed mad I could not continue, her response was "I have told him over and over again that no woman should be subjected to that while awake"...

It doesn't hurt - no more than a regular Pap. You may feel pressure and a little uncomfortable but it shouldn't hurt that bad. You also may feel a little sting when they spray the vineagar solution on you but that's it. If you're nervous, take midol before you go.

i would think its more of an uncomfortable thing... rather than painful...they may give meds after... in case there is cramping... its a routine procedure... which i know doesnt make u feel better... but it will be ok. good luck

My girlfriend just had one, she said it wasn't too bad. They don't give pain meds because its not that painful.

I thought it felt like really bad menstrual cramps. I took the afternoon off and took some ibuprofen and relaxed.
