The greatest preparation for leadership is this: doing.
There's an old saying: "What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say."
Leaders are chosen, not self-appointed. Leadership is sticking your neck out when no-one else will. Leadership is being reliable, dependable and sticking to your words. Leadership is influence - you must be able to relate to people in order to lead them.
A buddy of mine convinced me to join the Navy when things were at a boiling point in my house. Having been through boot camp already, he gave me advice: "don't be the leader that you always are, stop sticking out, trust me, lie low and boot camp will be easier and better." I followed his advice. Five days into boot camp, we had a self-appointed leader who had attended ROTC training for leadership. It is on the 5th day in boot camp when company commanders wreak havoc on your barracks during dinner, mixing up all of your clothes with people you barely know their names, flipping bunks, etc, etc. They then give you the night to find order in time for a morning inspection.
Our self-appointed leader broke down and began to cry. The short story of it is this: I calmly organized everyone to get our bunks in order and for each person to put their hat, name out, on their locker. I moved everyone into a circle and we threw all clothes in the middle and one by one, marching in a circle and singing something fun and hip at the time, everyone ended up with their clothes on their bunks ready to fold and tuck. We had fun and did what most companies do not - got the job done.
We breezed through inspection to our commanders surprise and when my company was questioned as to how we pulled it off (in which the self-appointed leader again cried), everyone pointed to me and before I knew it, I was wearing the leaders insignia and officially leading our company. So much for my friend’s advice. Point is: leaders stand out by doing and you can't hold them down and they cannot hide.
Relate to people, help them, be consistent and stick your neck out when noone else will. That's how you become a leader.
Best wishes!

Just start acting like one. Most people are followers anyway. This won't always work but very often others will just assume you are the leader. You do have to back it up by doing a good job though if you want to continue the ruse(although not always)
You can have People look up to you by seeming wealthy and knowledgeable, but you will be looked up to by the people you care about if you truly are helpful and knowledgeable. Help others and be as positive an influence on as many people as you can.
