What is involved with transferring a real estate license from one state to another? I am thinking of getting my real state license in HI but will be moving to TX eventually. Should I wait until I get to TX or is it not a big deal to transfer you license? Thanks!

Transferring licenses varies state to state as real estate laws vary. Texas does not have a reciprocal agreement with any other state. If you obtained a HI license you would have to take everything all over again to obtain a TX license. The only time TREC makes an exception is during some disasters, post-Katrina they granted licensure to a number of Louisiana agents.

Here's the link to the Texas Real Estate Commission's page on licensing. And here's a quote:

License Reciprocity Statement
Texas does not have reciprocity with any other states with regard to real estate licensure. A Texas broker may share a commission with a foreign licensee so long as the foreign licensee does not engage in activities requiring a license in Texas. All negotiations conducted within Texas must be handled by a Texas broker.

So, don't wait!!!!!!! Not having reciprocity does NOT mean you can't get streamlined through their system. You'll probably have to do some course work, to learn TX specific laws, etc... There's something about evaluating your coursework, and I'm sure if you call and ask about moving and continuing selling real estate, they'll know just what you need to do to get active in TX.

The short answer is you can't transfer most real estate licenses to other states. They are state licenses, very similar to your drivers license.
