Those are your choices?

I thought it was the cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney.

If I had to pick one it would be the steam engine.

World power maybe but i don't think world leader. You have a growing healthy economy, good amount of natural resources, and a competent armed forces. They are well trained and good fighters but military capabilities are very expensive. I just don't think 30 million people can support the budget needed become a world leader. I don't see how you can catch up to 300 million people or a billion in the case of India and 1.5 billion China. Also Americans played a important part in WW1 by supplying fresh troops which without their help Britain and France would not have been able to stay in the war because they were militarily exhausted. Americans won the battle of Belleau Woods and 130000 were involved in the Marne operation which ended the war. The 3rd division was nick named the rock the Marne because they held their ground under the weight of the last great German offensive of ww1 which was centered on their position. Even after the French troops on their left and right flank were pushed back and forced to regroup. The 3rd division held their ground then counter attacked which threw the Germans across the Marne river make it possible for the Allied offensive that finally caused the Germans to surrender. So Canada definitely did its part in WW1 and even though we entered late.We fought some important battles and played a key role.

The US market share probably was largely captured by slave labor and the gin. The plow and the mule had a major impact. Tractors and 2-row cotton pickers mechanized cotton farming and put a lot of sub-minimum wage workers out of work, but had limited impact in terms of production.
