I've heard that setting an electric water heater temperature setting higher than normal helps or prevents scale from forming on the elements. Is this true , and if so at what temp. setting ?

No, it actually shortens the life of the unit and the elements.

That is incorrect information. The heater setting should be hot enough for your everyday needs but not hot enough to scald you especially if you have children in the house.

Sounds highly unlikely- chemical reactions go faster at higher temperatures, plus think about your electic bill. Also if you have kids, scalding could be a serious danger to them.
