It really depends on the type of punishment and the personality of the student being punished. To my mind, the most important thing is that the punishment must fit the offense. It's silly to have a serious suspension for disobeying a minor rule. However, a major violation can not just be ignored.

Punishment often has a bigger effect on other students than it does on the person being punished. Seeing that someone is punished may keep other people from offending in the future.

I have to start by mentioning that i`m completely against physical punishment. But I do believe in the effectiveness of some other ways to impose some rules as long as they do not alter the child`s self-esteem or leave some deep scars in his/her soul...indeed, it is very difficult to find some efficient punishing methods taking in consideration all the negative sides that might prevent a healthy development of the kid.As long as the child realize the reasons of getting punished and the consequences of repeating that "behavior" that triggered the punishment...it seems that the method is a successful one. Avoid yelling or using harsh words and try to explain the matter with calm.

depends on the punishment, usually it is very effective in bringing about behavior changes. If you let a child know why they are being punished, how long the punishment will last and the behavior that will prevent them from being punished again...it usually works well...don't resort to absurd punishments that you have no intention on enforcing or that do not fit a particular transgression, (like throwing out all the toys because they left one in the living room)...make the punishment fit the crime and your child will respect it (he/she may not like it but they will understand)

Punishment is a good time to be alone and think about what you have done that caused the punishment. It give you alone time to think about how you would handle the situation next time.
