That's debatable. Mercury, Mars, Earth, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are now considered the eight planets of our solar system. Pluto was recently relegated to the classification of "plutoid," a term coined to indicate a body that meets less than three of the (new) requirements of a planet.

1. It must be sufficiently rounded as a result of its own gravity.
2. It must orbit our sun
3. It cleared the orbit of other objects (new)

This all came about due to the discovery of Kuiper Belt objects in orbit around our sun. Since Pluto orbits wildly it did not meet the third classification. Othewise there would be some 53 planets.

There used to be 9 until about a mont or two ago when scientists decided that Pluto was too small to be considered a planet. So we now have 8 planets in our solar system.

Right now? Eight. Pluto was degraded to a dwarf planet due to its distance from the sun and other physical properties. We may or may not discover new planets in our solar system, however we may discover more dwarf planets in the future.

they said there were nine for a long time and then said that pluto was now not a planet but an asteroid or an escaped moon because it is mostly rock and the outer planets are all gas....so I personally think it is a moon or asteroid....♥

8 now, including many dwarf planets being discovered, I think its so they don't have to memorize all of them. Otherwise it would get higher and higher as telescopes and probes got further
