I am planning to move to a neighboring school district next year. I'd like to teach elementary school there, but I plan to continue teaching at my current school until the end of the year. When should I start applying for other teaching jobs? And should I tell my current school that I'm planning to leave first? Any advice?

My advice: Look on the internet or contact the district via telephone. Some districts begin to hire teachers earlier than others. Also, different types of schools hire earlier than earliers. Where I'm from, private , charter, and alternative schools begin to hire around February. They like to be settled by May or June. On the other hand, the public schools don't hire until May, June, and July. Knowing this, I say to begin looking now. It is never too early.

As far as telling your current school that you are leaving. Don't tell them first, you do not need their approval to look for a job. Also, you may change your mind about moving and you have already put in your letter of resignation.

Good Luck!

Well the first question is are there advertised job openings? If there are then you should apply for them. You also need to review your current teaching contract--are there penalties for resigning after a certain date? A union representative can help you out there if you are a union member. In general do not tell your current school that you're planning to leave. The school you're applying to may even have a place on their form to mark down that they don't know you're leaving. I would try to secure a couple of references from your current workplace because schools are very particular about finding out if you've had any "problems" there. You can do this without notifying them of your intention to leave. Just say that you would like to get a reference from them since they are obviously moving up in their career and you are worried they might change schools and may forget who you are!

In some school districts applying for another job without resigning the other is grounds for termination so be careful and know your rights.

Most School Districts start evaluating around February or March I would go and inquire next month. Dont tell your current boss though.

In our area, they start hiring as early as late February. I don't recommend telling your employer until you have accepted another position. You should notify them as quickly as possible and not past July--so they have time to hire someone.
