first you add three to each sides, so that eliminates the 3 on the left side, and you also add 3 to the right of the equation and that makes the 17 to 20. So you then have 5x/2=20. Then you multiply 2 on each side, and that makes the equation 5x=40. Now 5 times what is 40?? Eight!

you multiply both parts with 2 => 2* (5x/2)= 20*2 <=>
5x= 40 <=>

First: eliminate the fraction > multiply the denominator by everything...
2(5x/2) - 2(3) = 2(17)
Sec: cross cancel "like" terms & combine the remaining terms...
5x - 6 = 34
Third: add 6 to both sides (moving variables to the opposite side means: use the opposite sign)...
5x - 6 + 6 = 34 + 6
5x = 40
*Solve for "x" by isolating it on one side-divide both sides by 5...
5x/5 = 40/5
x = 8
P.S. Toronto you've been reported & J.R. > there's no need for you to criticize "real" math tutors-they're not idiots.

(5x divided by 2) - 3 = 17
(5x divided by 2) = 17 +3
(5x divided by 2) = 20
5x = 20 times 2
5x = 40
x = 40 divided by 5
x = 8
