You could argue that taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere (which is what trees do) then turning the wood into paper which is probably dumped into an anaerobic landfill where it doesn't decompose helps reduce the atmosphere's CO2 level. Also, the newspaper companies (and those who buy newspapers), not the government, determine the length of the newspaper.

The government is serious about global warming, I think, but now it is down to me and you. If we feel that we are paying our hard earned cash on pages and pages of adverts in newspapers, then we should just stop buying them.

Everyone is wanting to make money, but it is the consumer who has to pay. I don't think this is right.

Newsprint is more or less environmentally neutral, as it comes from sustainable forests - that is, new trees are planted as fast as the old trees are cut down. So the carbon dioxide generated by burning old newspapers is recycled by the growing trees into wood again. The situation improves even further if old newspapers are buried instead of burned.
