Yes, they actually do. I don't know if any of them actually expect to get rich though. Seems like more of a hobby to me.

yes the do. sometimes they come out in large numbers. the locate a quarter here and there, a nickel or a soggy watch. no treasure, mostly beer cans. they have to dig a lot so it provides a little cariovascular benefit. some people can only exercise by doing something like that. you know, like growing tomatoes and stuff inthe backyard. they wouldn't dream of biking or jogging. that is my guess why the metal detectors are all over fla beaches. calif?

I've been wanting one of those metal detectors, but I have no beach :(, but I'd like to try one just the same. Does that mean I'm getting old?

Indeed! One local beach has several detector fans combing the sand every morning, as it is a busy spot... jewelry, coins etc....

Yes they do! A couple of years ago, my brother and his young son had one and they spent many hours walking on the beach finding coins and assorted jewelry pieces. It didn't turn up anything of great value in the long run, but it bonded them personally.

I think they are mostly looking for stuff that people drop, which is a lot. Going to the beach most people take off jewelry, coins wallets, and such and most bathing suits have not pockets. Stuff gets dropped, and there is very little chance that you will find it.

Yes, I live on the coast and you really do see the odd person with one! I think the biggest find they get is old beer cans and the odd penny which someone has dropped!
