Maybe I'm not clear on my previous question - I DON'T want to subscribe to Direct TV service, I want to know if I buy the DVR @ Costco for less than $100 will I be able to do on the air recording of cable channels? Is there something I have to reconfigure to make it work this way?

First let's clarify some things.
If you buy a DirecTv DVR for less than 100 dollars (i.e. 99 dollars), you are LEASING a DVR. What you pay at Costco will cover the upfront lease fee as well as the installation of the DVR. You'll be provided with a code at check out that you will allow you to call DTV to schedule the installation. You will then be required to pay $4.99/mo lease fee unless it's your only DirecTv receiver. In addition, you'll need to pay 5.99/mo DVR service fee unless you subscribe to Total Choice Premier in which DVR service is included. Finally, you'll have to agree to a two year programming commitment. No, you will not be owning this receiver - 99 dollars is the standard lease fee, and yes DirecTv leases receivers through retailers like CostCo and Best Buy.

Secondly, if you don't want to subscribe to DTV service, don't get a DirecTv DVR - it won't work.

I m guessing the original poster meant hooking up a DVR directly to a TV and wanting to know if that would work for receiving over the air signals for free. They weren t talking about the pay-for-tv company DirecTV.

i'm no longer thoroughly particular about direct television, yet i understand some television vendors can do PiP (photo in photo) and others won't be able to. on one in all my networks, it worked till i have been given the DVR field, which then made it so as that i could not PiP. sturdy success! you would possibly want to opt for to the contact direct television for solutions
