Here's some info:

"SHS students hold art
show in memory of Lucille Hand

On March 5 of last year, Salem artist Lucille Hand passed away. During her lifetime, Hand was an active member of the local art guild and a respected member of the community. Former owner of the Hand and Company Art Gallery in Salem, Hand actively promoted creativity and artistic expression within her community.
Now, one year after her passing, several community members have combined forces to hold an art show in her memory. Larry Cropper, pastor at Salem United Methodist Church, has partnered with SHS art teacher Jane Spencer-Pierce and her advanced art students to hold a contest that will be judged by the residents of Salem as a way to honor Lucille and remember her dedication to encouraging creativity in the people around her.
Students in Spencer-Pierce’s advanced class were assigned the task of creating a project based on the scriptures from Luke 19:28 to Luke 24:12. Students could choose any scripture or combination of scriptures from the selected texts and create a project of their choice. The students worked on their projects for several weeks and were to have them completed by the time they left for spring break.
The projects will be on display at the church from this Friday, April 2 through next Friday, April 9. Local residents are invited to visit the display and vote for their favorite project. The contest winners will be announced at the 10:30 a.m. Easter morning celebration service on April 11.
Spencer-Pierce was happy to let her students participate in the contest. “I always respected her (Lucille),” she said. She commented that many of her students asked family members for help in choosing and interpreting a scripture. She said that the contest is “something special” to honor Lucille, and was happy that the students were involving other people in their lives with their project.
Cropper is very excited about the display and the opportunity to honor Lucille. “She had a great attitude,” he said. He commented that the display will be “totally unique.” It is a way to honor Lucille and celebrate Easter.
Most of the students participating agreed that choosing a scripture to use was one of the biggest challenges of the project.
The public is encouraged to visit the Salem United Methodist Church, located at the corner of East Market and North High Streets, to see the displays and vote for their favorite project. The projects will be on display on the following days: April 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., April 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 4 from 1:30 to 6 p.m., April 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and April 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Everyone is allowed one vote. The top three projects will be announced at the 10:30 a.m. service on Easter Sunday.
Also in celebration of Easter and in honor of the creativity encouraged by Lucille, Brett Owen, a 2003 SHS graduate and art student at Indiana University, will be painting during the Good Friday Service on April 9 at beginning at noon.
