No. Tivo is not a cable provider. You still need your cable service.

Tivo is not a cable provider. It is like a VCR that only records TV shows. You still need a cable provider like Comcast, Time Warner, Cox to deliver the cable service to your house.

Tivo is more of a recorder that works with your current cable. I got a Tivo box for christmas and I love it. I thought the best differentiating feature was the web interface -- you can schedule shows to record from anywhere with web access!! You can transfer recorded programs to your laptop too...but I haven't tried that yet.
