If you are referring to Nazi camps during WWII, many of these camps were known to the civilian populace as labor camps or P.O.W. camps. Unless they had regular business with the camps themselves or direct contact with people on the camps, they might have never known what was transpiring within the walls.

Possibly because they didn't want the blame put on them. There was nothing they could really do, and if they tried they would have been killed. I think many people unfortunately just turned the other way.

many people still believe what their governments told them about those facilities - which is/was obviously not the truth - rather than believe that their parents or grandparents would allow horrors of that magnitude to occur on their country's soil.

It makes them feel guilty that they lived so close to where many people were suffering so they prefer to DENY reality.

Also, they were not actually advertised to th epeople at large, although they had their suspicions.

I know some people in Bavaria and their relatives were told it was slaughter houses (cattle)
