Why can't everyone just work together within their own countries for the greater good, rather than split off and go their own way??

Because both the Scots and the French-Canadians in Quebec are sick and tired of being told what to do by the English, who, while they have large numbers, are really useless wankers.

Maybe Scotland and Quebec can form a new nation together. Our flag will be a red circle with a line going through the Union Jack.

I don't know about the Scots but when Quebec nearly separated from Canada. The natives didn't want any part of it because apparently, Buchard said some thing pissed off the natives. So the natives said no were staying with Canada, we want our land back. Quebec would have been stuck with only the land along the St.Lawrence. The Natives would have pretty well every thing and even if Quebec would have had all of the land. How would they have survived on there own not getting all the transfer fees that they get from the rest of the country. Then they talked about doing trade with France and the United states, well France fine they talk french. The states on the other hand talks English and when you go to Quebec most french in Quebec even if they can talk English won't give you the time of day. There is no way in hell that the states are going to do trade with a country that won't communicate in English. May be the larger corporations and the government will deal with them but once the Americans or any country that don't talk french starts to deal with all the documents in french they'll just walk away especially if extra money has to be spent hiring a translator to read all the documents. The last referandum for separation was so close that from what I heard is that a lot of Quebecers were getting ready to leave they had every thing packed up with no thought about where they were going to live once they got out. Quebec has to much to lose if they seperate from the rest of Canada

Federalism (States rights)is the basis of this issue and part of the United States founding documents. But it is being eroded. The Federal Government in the US is taking liberty from the States. No child left behind is an example. Some states want to run their own school system without being bothered by suits in Washington.

Consider California, they passed a law regulating a herbal drug that they thought was dangerous. The makers of the drug went to Washington and purchased legislation making it illegal for states to make laws about herbal compounds. They go their money's worth too. They also make it illegal for the Federal Government to regulate herbal compounds. This end run around the California legislature amounts to a power grab or bullying by the Federal Government.

When these conditions become too much and justice is not being done a people will desire greater autonomy.

they speak different languages/dialects, and arent as oppressive towards themselves as the larger countries are. the British are oppressive and have only given grief and enslavement to the people they have met (conquered) throughout time.
